Designing 2D scrolling spaces

“Navigating large information spaces can be disorienting even on a large screen. On a small screen it should ideally be avoided, but that is not where we are headed. Increased storage capacity and higher bandwidth mean that you can have thousands of songs, images, messages and whatnot on your phone. We need good ways to interact with all this data. This post looks at 2D navigation and investigates what techniques good mobile browsers employ to make it easier to interact with large web pages.”

Designing games graphics for small screens

“The judo rule: Turn your weaknesses into your strengths. If you cannot escape the limitations of the small screen, use them to your advantage! Think of ways to turn the screen size into an integral part of gameplay — part of the game’s challenge that the player must learn to overcome. Make the small screen a cognitive challenge, not just a visual limitation.”

Co-design for mobile devices

David Williams writes about co-design for mobile devices.

“How does this collaborative model change the UI design process? Until recently, the user interface of mobile devices was researched, designed, developed, and tested by UI groups within manufacturers such as Nokia and Motorola. Development took place on proprietary software and hardware platforms…With the codesign model, design control must be shared with other organizations, e.g., operator design teams that are more likely to be in marketing groups or third-party application developers. These teams may be as well or better skilled to produce user interface designs but will have different design and commercial objectives.”
