Nokia’s vision of mobile futures
Nokia’s just published a set of presentations and podcasts from an event they organised that showcases the future of mobile. Talks include ‘Future energy sources for mobile communications’ and ’ Connecting smartly for the future’.
“Nokia’s approach to technology is to think not only about the technology itself, but about how it will be used and how it impacts our lives. In the “The Way We Live Next” technology media event a team of technology experts and visionaries from Nokia presented their visions of what the future might bring in areas such as nanotechnology, mobile banking, new energy sources and web technologies.”

Current work in UbiComp
“My talk “Designing a new ecology of mixed digital and physical environments” was a critical overview of ubiquitous computing (slides as a pdf) based on current research in the field (showing what people like Paul Dourish or Genevieve Bell are discussing but also geographers such as Stephen Graham), art/start-up/research projects and alternative visions such as what I am doing with Julian Bleecker. As I said in the talk, lots of the aspects presented here as design challenges are messy to reflect the complexity of ubicomp design.”

Research and innovation
Jan Chipchase has shared another of his team’s presentations, this time talking about design research and the relationship of research to product.
Each subsequent presentation published on Future Perfect seems to become more and more elliptical, but there are some great pictures of the Nokia team’s research through Asia.

Haptics and the mobile
Research about the use of haptics in mobile devices.
“This degree project aims at exploring and testing new interaction techniques using the touch sense in particular. The skin is a very complex and refined organ. It offers extreme sensitivity and tremendous capabilities as a medium between the outside world and us. The experience of touching or feeling is something that is very hard to match across other senses.”

An introduction to designing for mobile
A nice introductory presentation about the elements and challenges faced when designing for mobile devices.
“My workshop focused on the mobile ecosystem, some of the basic fundamentals as well as dispel myths and jargon common to the mobile industry. As this information can be incredibly hard to come by outside of the mobile industry, it seemed like a good place to start…
“But being a mobile designer doesn’t need to be as perplexing as it may seem. Given a little insider information and what you already probably know, you can begin creating the next generation of mobile websites and applications.”

Miniaturisation and cultural change
Podcast of a discussion panel from SXSW ‘06.
“A library of music that might have once filled an entire room can now be stored on an MP3 player smaller than a deck of playing cards. New chip technologies and improved memory capabilities are enabling music players and a host of gadgets to decrease in size while simultaneously increasing in functionality. This session explores the next wave of innovation while also examining the cultural impact of such changes.”
