Compulsion

Back from a fantastic week and a bit in Mexico I’m slowly catching up on things. I liked Marek’s piece about compulsion. I don’t like the idea of ‘compulsion’ per se, but acknowledgment of the emotional elements at play is nice.

“The iPhone is a great example of how to move from capability and compulsion. There are already tens of millions of users out there equipped with Windows Mobile smartphones and high-end products from Samsung, Sony Ericsson and LG. All of them are capable of accessing a wealth of additional software and services, but we know from various independent studies that iPhone users are much more likely to utilise additional non-voice services. Where other handset manufacturers provide their users with the raw capabilities, Apple offers users a compelling reason to explore new things.”

“Perhaps, though, the real issue is not whether mobile devices should focus mainly on communication or information processing. There is a broader concern – should one device try to do everything for a user or should there be specialized tools, each carefully crafted to support a particular type of activity? This is the debate over the value of an ‘appliance attitude’ in mobile design. Should we focus on simple, activity-centered devices – ones that might well combine task-specific communication and information facilities – or look to providing a ‘Swiss Army Knife’ that has every communication and information management feature a manufacturer can pack into it?”

Capturing fleeting emotional experiences

“Emosive is a service for mobile devices which allows capturing, storing and sharing of fleeting emotional experiences. Based on the Cognitive Priming theory, as we become more immersed in digital media through our mobile devices, our personal media inventories constantly act as memory aids, “priming” us to better recollect associative, personal (episodic) memories when facing an external stimulus.”
