Why UI simulation can suck

I was hanging out at the Nikon store in Kuala Lumpur today, embracing my inner camera geek while a DSLR sensor was cleaned. Up on the big televisions I saw a video advertising the very cool looking S70 touchscreen camera.

I know well how underpowered the CPUs on these devices are, so I was impressed that Nikon had been able to pull this UI off. I walked over to the display and picked up the demo model.

Problem was, it was not much like the video. Response time was slower and motion effects were minimal. It felt like a very different camera to what I’d seen.

Designers are often accused of creating demo-ware that doesn’t correlate with reality. This was at the other end of the cycle: marketing folks creating a simulation of a product that doesn’t match what exists in the world.

Firefox Mobile concept video

Aza Raskin demos a nice, simple concept for Firefox Mobile. My favorite quote: “Trying to type on mobile is like trying to remove a contact lens with a cotton ball; it’s just not fun.” It looks like a strong concept, though I’m not sure of the value of the ‘tab’ space like he describes – I don’t believe that user-organised zoom spaces on mobile are better than system-organised ones.

Android video demos

A few Android video demos have landed. The first one shows some nice details with a window-blind metaphor for accessing core functions, as well as a perplexing use of the ‘icons on a desktop’ metaphor.

The second shows a rather cool use of a compass in the hardware. I’m sure that there are lots of fun opportunities for games as well as mapping. Sensors are making portable devices so much more fun.

HTC Touch Diamond Demo

If I paid a dollar every time Horace Luke of HTC says ‘simple’ in this product launch I’d be down about $132. Hyperbole aside, it’s an interesting piece of design.

Online phone simulator

TryPhone has online interactive simulations of a few handsets, hopefully with more available soon. A less expensive way to play with phones than buying a design review collection.

“Use our fully interactive online virtual handsets to test-drive mobile devices, applications, content and services, as well as watch demos – right from the comfort and convenience of your own computer.”

Microsoft’s “Shift” for touchscreens

Microsoft’s Shift uses call-outs to deal with the problem of fingers covering targets on touchscreen devices.

“Retrieving the stylus of a pen-based device takes time and requires a second hand. Especially for short, intermittent interactions many users therefore choose to use their bare fingers instead. Although convenient, this increases targeting times and error rates. We argue that the main reason is the occlusion of the target by the user’s finger. We propose a pointing technique we call Shift that is designed to address this issue. When the user touches the screen, Shift creates a callout showing a copy of the occluded screen area and places it in a non-occluded location. The callout also shows a pointer representing the hotspot of the finger. Using this visual feedback, users guide the pointer into the target by moving their finger on the screen surface and commit the target acquisition by lifting the finger. Over large targets, in contrast, no callout is created and users enjoy the full performance of an unaltered touch screen.”
